How Expensive is an Audi B8 S4 3.0T 115K Mile Service?

Why is servicing important?

Regular servicing of a vehicle is crucial for maintaining performance, reliability, and safety. While it doesn’t guarantee that the vehicle will never break down, it significantly improves the odds. Everything ages, and servicing serves as a preventative step to mitigate the impact of aging. Old fluids such as oil and coolant accelerate the aging process drastically, and these are some of the easiest components to change.

We spend so much on improving the performance of a car and I want that performance to be available every time I drive it!

Everything that was done in the Audi B8 S4 Service

Direct from the local Audi dealer, the 115K service includes: engine oil & filter, transmission oil & filter, spark plugs, engine air filter and cabin air filter. The transmission pan needs to come off to replace the transmission filter, so gasket, drain/fill plugs and pan bolts are also required.

Parts (for 2010 B8 S4 – always check with your dealer for VIN specific part numbers):

DSG Fluid (6-7): LM20044

Pan bolts (15): N91096801

Trans filter O-Ring (1): WHT003379

Drain plug washer(1): N0138275

Drain plug(1): WHT005282

Trans filter(1): 0B5325429E

Oil pan gasket(1) 0B5321371F

Spark plugs(6): 101905631G

Cabin Air Filter(1): 8K0819439B

Air Filter(1): 8K0133843

DIY vs Dealer

It is my personal preference to do all of the maintenance on my vehicles myself. It is not to say that the dealer does a bad job; I have just had a few issues in the past, and at least this way, I only have myself to blame and know exactly what was done. Unfortunately, some dealers pay their service technicians based on book rates. If a job has a book rate of 3 hours, the technician will be paid for 3 hours of work, even if it only takes them an hour. This rewards speed, which doesn’t always lead to quality.

How much does it cost?

I called Audi and they quoted me $2,000 to perform the 115,000 mile service.

In total, all of the parts (full details in the video) came to a whopping $417.29! That means I saved over $1,500 by doing this work myself. This of course doesn’t take into account any labor but the job inly takes a couple of hours.

Check out the video for all the details on the Audi B8 S4 115K Service including DSG.

Audi B8 S4 3.0T TFSI Fuel Injector Service

Clean or replace: is the choice clear?

For years, I have been sending injectors out to be cleaned and tested. Why? Injectors are expensive, and in my humble experience, I haven’t encountered many failures. They are a simple but nifty part whose sole job is to squirt fuel into the combustion chamber. Now, it likely is just the injectors I have used (I know BMW injectors can be a little prone to failure), but in this video, I apply what I have always done… well, almost!”

Cheap fuel injector cleaners on Amazon: Are they worth it? Maybe.

I know, I know, that sounds like a cop-out. The ones I purchased and tested worked fine for 12V, but check out the video to see how they fared with 70V, 70PSI Audi injectors. Now, I did get some results, but they were not what I expected. You’ll have to watch the video to find out if I kept the machine, but it’s best to decide for yourself how useful it is. Oh, and stick around, because in the future, I have an idea on how to drastically change things!”

Resealing Audi B8 S4 V6 3.0T TFSI Injectors

It requires a special tool (details in the video), but I do show you every aspect of how to replace the combustion seal, fuel rail seals, and retaining rings on these injectors. It’s a little time-consuming but well worth doing. Oh, and remember, the combustion seal must be installed dry and free from grease!

Check out the video for all the details on the Audi B8 S4 fuel injectors.

Video: My Audi S4 B8 Injectors were worse than I thought. Reuse them or buy new? What would you do?

Should You Buy a Salvage Audi B8 S4?

I Bought Two Audi B8 S4s Without Seeing them First to Take Racing

OK, I must have a problem and I cannot stop myself! I can’t remember exactly how, but earlier this year, I stumbled across the B8/B8.5 3.0T Supercharged Audi S4 platform and concocted a crazy plan to purchase a couple of them to race. You might have seen my other post on the subject. Well, after finally resolving all the issues with liens and titles, here they are!

Audi B8 S4 Common Questions Answered

This series of videos intends to answer many of the common questions I saw when researching the platform. This includes:

Should I buy a car without a sports differential?

B8 or B8.5 Audi S4?

Are they good track cars?

What can I do to improve braking on track?

What are the best performance tires to use on the Audi B8 S4?

Should I worry about purchasing an Audi S4 with over 100K miles?

What are the common maintenance items that need to be done on the B8 Audi S4?

How do I carbon clean the intakes on the B8 Audi S4?

How to hunt down a parasitic battery drain on an Audi S4?

Should I modify my supercharged Audi S4?

What is the best suspension setup for the Audi S4?

…. and many more

Should You Buy an B8 Audi S4?

I did not delve into this in the video, but so far, I am impressed. The platform is very capable and comfortable. In the past, I have driven a variety of cars, from the Mazda Miata to a Ferrari 458 Speciale. Now, while the S4 cannot compare to something like the 458, it has certainly piqued my interest and rightly so.

In doing my research, I could not find any other platform with as much opportunity for tuning from such a robust starting point. The video touches on the briefly, but from what I have discovered, these engines are quite robust!

How Does the B8 S4 Compare to the RS5?

My 2013 Audi RS5 still has under 30K miles on the clock, but it is stock and a high revving V8. It is unfair for me to compare the experience there to the 2015 B8.5 S4 shown in the video. Why? Because the S4 had been heavily modified and was previously totaled. My initial experience driving the car ~600 miles from Milwaukee to Kansas City wasn’t the best, largely due to the terrible exhaust the previous owner had installed (never, ever, ever put a straight-through exhaust on this car!).

However, the car is growing on me. As I start to set things straight, I find myself connecting with it more and more. To be continued!

One fascinating thing to note, though, is that while they likely have different software tunes, the transmissions and differentials appear to be the same and share many identical parts. Good old Audi.

Cheap or expensive? High or Low mileage? Sports diff or normal?

Ever wondered if these cars are suitable for the track? Well, this year, we intend to find out! Join the channel as we embark on the journey of prepping and tracking two Audi S4 B8/B8.5 3.0L Supercharged cars.

Since purchasing the 2013 B8 Audi RS5, I have been impressed with Audi from both an engineering and performance standpoint. While we wait for the Rush cars to become available, I couldn’t resist purchasing a couple of these awesome cars for the purpose of tracking.

Audi may not be the most common choice for a track car, but our goal is to either discover why or see if we can change that perception!

So the goal for this year is to get back on track in a low cost way… and have a hoot doing it! After I sold my truck and trailer a few years ago, towing a car to the track is no longer an option (and to be fair I don’t want to deal with all of that right now). I want to go back to more simple times when I could just pack up and go!

I have become a huge fan of Audi after I picked up my first one a couple of years ago (enter the RS5 when I sold the truck). Peter Krause commented on one of my pics of the RS5 last year that my car was the best car he had ever driven on track (same model, not my car – mine is a Sunday driver). That got me really curious. That curiosity won’t go away so I neeed to satisfy it 🙂

Modern Audi’s are a little on the heavy side so the cars will be a little bit of an underdog. That’s OK as I love making things better and at the same time improving myself 🙂 These things have so much potential.

The cars:

2010 Audi S4 – 7 speed sequential (DSG), No sports diff. One owner, 116K on the clock and serviced by a Porsche garage all its life (from NJ)

2015 Audi S4 – 7 speed sequential (DSG) , Sports diff and dynamic suspension. 38K on the clock with fairly good service history (from MD)

Both the 2010 and the 2015 Audi S4 horsepower is claimed to be 333HP from the factory. This has been found to be more in practice but it doesn’t take much to get them to over 500HP! It is surprising that the 2015 Audi S4 horsepower wasn’t increased as part of the B8.5 facelift, but if it isn’t broken…

I’ve gone through both cars and have ordered all of the necessary parts. As part of the preparation for the first event both cars are getting brake upgrades, and the 2015 is having the straight through pipes replaced with a proper exhaust system! I also have to replace all of the front control arms on the 2010. Other than that, both are in great shape!

Why Two?

Well, one of the primary reasons is to ensure that I can carry out the season without any issues. The other is to compare the stock vs modified versions and illustrate any improvement. Lastly, it’s to tell a funny story if one of them breaks down.. just like the infamous Top Gear cars that used to lurk in the background during the specials (in case one of the presenters’ cars needed help).

Also plan to have others joining me through the season (including Ross Bentley) and the two cars will vastly help.

The Story

The plan is to hopefully demonstrate how accessible and enjoyable track driving can be. Starting with the cars in stock form (except for the brakes which are essential), I will document the progression of the cars throughout the season. They will be driven to the track so at some point they may even get small trailers 🙂 With Audi joining Formula 1, it is an excellent time to engage the Audi community.

The Audi A4 platform was chosen as it is one of Audi’s most popular models (and there are plenty of interchange parts from the S4 to A4). The sequential box is being used as there are more of them available. I would have preferred a manual and I might take a bit of flack from the “save the manual” community. The truth is the manual cars are getting more expensive and there are some benefits to the DSG on track.

The goal is to demonstrate that you can have fun at the track with high mileage cars, and to answer questions like: “how much of a difference does a sports differential make to performance”.

Development through the year

Upgrade driver first – Of course the most important thing and where much of the discussion will happen 🙂

Weight savings – the Audi’s are heavy. I have materials on the way to make carbon fiber fenders, doors etc etc. Some weight savings will be seen in the brake area (as the setup will be lighter than stock – calipers and rotors) – think Colin Chapman, “simplify, then add lightness!”

Suspension upgrade/tuning – starting with the roll bars! I also have a set of springs to do a direct comparison of the stock setup to an easily accessible/common setup. Apparently the stock suspension performs very well but we’ll see (roll bars might have to come earlier).

Tune/mild modifications – This platform is very stout. Out of the box it’s 333 HP. With a few minor modifications and cooling you can easily get to 450 HP; 550 HP with a few more tweaks. Really want to analyze how and if adding tons of power can change your performance on track with pros and cons. Note, the 2015 Audi S4 horsepower will be increased whilst leaving the 2010 stock.

Rear wheel drive modification! Sacrilege for the Audi Quattro fans, but many are interested in it. Will it help or hurt the platform? This mod will be left for at least half way through the season and is completely reversible. Depending on how the power to weight works out I may have to do this prior to doing the stage 1 tune… we will see. All very easy to do though.

Rough outline (all of the road racing events are with NASA and schedule can be found on their site: https://drivenasamidamerica.com/)

Updated 🙂

April

Intro both cars, general maintenance (engine, ignition, gearbox and diff) – Talk about the plan for the year. Replace the straight through exhaust on the B8.5!

Dyno video of both cars in starting state (after maintenance) – B8.5 might borrow the stock exhaust from the B8 to show the difference between exhausts (Any guesses on the 2015 Audi S4 horsepower?)

Data Driven

At each step there will be a data driven approach. Many aspects will be measured (brake temperatures, brake fluid moisture content, ambient temperatures, track temperatures, tire temperatures and tread depths etc). Time will of course be paramount, but I intend to break down the performance to corners vs just focusing on entire laps.

Reversible

One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is that all of the modifications etc will all be fully reversible. That allows me to get to the end of the year and either put the cars back to stock and sell them… or…. commit to turning them into full track cars! Who wants to see how far we can take the 2015 Audi S4 horsepower!

At this rate the 2013 Audi RS 5 will be ready for anything. At just 28,000 miles it is not easy to understand why I would be replacing the transmission fluid. Well it turns out that the DL501 transmission had a few issues 2013 and prior. The internal PCB in the transmission would fail through contamination and heat. Improvements were made but early on Audi were replacing entire transmissions. Now you can get a PCB kit but with a regular trans flush we should be able to put that off for a while.

I still need to change the MTF side of the transmission and to a complete fluid change on the rear differential. More on that another time.

In the video I will show you how to drain the fluid, replace the internal and external filters as well as the proper method to fill the transmission and do a final level check. Spoiler you will need a tool to read the transmission temperature. I used OBDEleven which I picked up when working on the GTi. Ross-Tech VCDS will also work. I do have one but I am ashamed to say I actually haven’t used it yet!

After 10 years there are a preventative maintenance jobs that need to be taken care of (coolant for one!) but there is also those 10 year old tires that have to be replaced. The video goes through details of how to change the coolant (most of it anyway!), an oil change as it has been 18 months and the experience working with a mobile tire service.

For the performance this car has to be one of the easiest I have worked on. OK so I have not had to do anything too complicated but so far I am enjoying it. I have also been amazed at how relatively inexpensive many of the parts/fluids are for the car. Must have something to do with sharing a parent company with VW!

The plan from here on out is to try and be good about recording, editing and uploading at least a video a week. In order to do that (and stand a chance of keeping up with things), it’s time to bring everyone up to speed with the garage 🙂

Quick intro to a couple of new vehicles and then updates on platforms you have seen before. After this I will feel good about going forward!
